Wausau School Forest Learning Center

Wausau, WI
Delivery Method: Build
Architect: Somerville Architects

The Wausau School District and Wausau School Foundation began their journey in creating a unique learning environment, updating an existing lodge, in 2018. With Somerville Architects and other design partners casting the vision, Ellis Construction was proud to bring this 9,310 square-foot building to life.

The School Forest Lodge more than doubled the space of the old facility, with four large classrooms and a central museum/collections space. A mezzanine overlooks the museum space and acts as another learning and activity area. In the spacious lobby, a local artist sculpted a realistic tree to bring the natural aesthetic into the building. A health room, restrooms, office and kitchenette for staff and ample storage make up the main floor. An outdoor amphitheater brings a dedicated learning space into the outdoors and expansive north and east-facing windows offer amazing views of the Wisconsin River and incorporate daylight into all corners of the facility.

This new facility will be used for generations to come, so it was important to use timeless and durable materials in unique ways that would elevate the aesthetic.
