Solarus
Wisconsin Rapids, WI
Delivery Method: Design/Build
Architect: Ellis Construction
This design-build renovation for Solarus, a growing regional telecommunications company in central Wisconsin, transformed a 1950s and 60s-era building into a modern, 21st-century facility while preserving its historic character. Spanning over 30,000 square feet, with 17,800 square feet fully renovated, the project included a complete demolition down to structural components, extensive mechanical and electrical upgrades, and a reimagined first floor.
Key design features included restoring the original 1957 lobby as the main entrance, enhancing customer flow with updated wayfinding, landscaping, and accessibility improvements. The project also incorporated a new energy recovery ventilator (ERV) system, proactively procured to mitigate supply chain delays, ensuring efficient HVAC performance. Despite challenges with routing ductwork through tight spaces and demolishing existing chases, Ellis Construction maintained the project schedule through meticulous planning and phased execution.
Community benefits were central to the project. Solarus continued uninterrupted operations throughout construction, safeguarding critical telecommunications infrastructure, including the backbone 911 system for Wood County and internet and phone services for the region. Ellis implemented rigorous safety protocols to protect these ZERO FAIL systems, ensuring no service disruptions.
The phased renovation allowed Solarus to maintain award-winning service while modernizing its facilities. This project highlights the power of thoughtful design-build collaboration, balancing historic preservation, cutting-edge technology, and community impact.
